A complex and impressive drawing in ink and watercolor, featuring a female nude at left and a half-male/half animal figure at right. The artist, Jan Lebenstein, signed at lower right and dated the work there 1968. The measurements are 17 1/2" by 21" artwork and 24" by 30" framed in silver tone metal frame. The condition is good, a small tear at the upper left corner of the drawing. Lebenstein was born in Poland and died there after a long career in the fine arts. He studied at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. By the 1950's he was attracting notice. For a time the artist worked in Paris. Quite early on, his figures exhibited what has been called "deformation"; as the years went on, most of the figures were altered away from reality, towards fantasy, and the bizarre, many resembling animals and beasts. Lebenstein also worked in sculpture. A number of his pieces have been sold at auction in Poland.
