The accomplished ink drawing is of a young man and woman seated at a counter, conversing or perhaps flirting. The piece measures 15 1/2" by 16" and 27" by 27" as framed in a birds eye maple frame. John Groth was born in Chicago and received his art education there and in New York City. He was in Europe during World War Two as a combat artist, and it is for his drawings of war, combat and military subjects that he is best known today. After the war he developed a successful career as an illustrator of major magazines. He also worked on comic art and graphic art. The New York Times obituary for Groth included a mention of his having taught a weekly night class at New York's Art Students League since the year 1942. A favorite subject of the artist was horses, whether racing or otherwise interacting with humankind. He also drew cowboys and western subject matter, genre, and . **This drawing for some unexplained reason appears to have been cut irregularly in half at some point after it was created; the two halves have slightly displaced and do not match up perfectly in their present position.
