Francis Hopkinson Smith ( 1838 - 1915 ), a descendant of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was an American artist, author, and engineer who won acclaim and awards for his paintings which were often watercolors dealing with maritime or riparian themes. His paintings are found in the collections of important private and public portfolios. The one presented here is a view of the ocean atop a cliff. It depicts a serene sea and the verdant coastal areas. It was most likely painted during the 4th quarter of the 19th century at which time Smith was most devoted to watercolor painting. Condition of the painting is excellent though the frame requires a touch up.
