An stoneware cheese keeper or dome decorated with Bamboo and Trellis motif consisting of black enameled trellis surrounded by leaves and cherry blossoms in pink, green, and ochre. The base of the dome and the handle continue the bamboo motif. The exciting feature of the dome is its orange peel texture which adds additional interest to this Aesthetic Movement work of art.
The base is raised on short pedestal and s decorated with near scarlet band encircling raised x's. The dome and base are marked 1883 OH, most likely of British origin. The structural condition is excellent, while the scarlet banding shows wear especially on the base of he stand. Otherwise the enamels are crisp and vivid - just as they were when first produced. Expect rare sporadic color blemishes.
The cheese dome is a keeper - it is simply a delightful artifact of the late 19th century which are harder and harder to find.
