This grand old light flow blue sugar box has a bright white body in an octagonal shape with ribbed sides and applied tied branch handles with molded leaves on their bases. The neck and rim are decorated in blue swag and foliate motifs. The domed lid is topped with a grape knop. We have not identified the pattern, but the previous owner may have left a clue with an applied label reading Chordette. The 2 panels on each side are decorated with a castle in a sylvan setting. The underside is illegibly marked. We date the box to c. 1830-40. Condition is over all very good with the most notable detraction being a couple of small chips in the top rim of the box. The underside has spider crazing which we believe is superficial rather than structural. There is some detritus built up for the past 175 years. These large hollow ware pieces are a high point in most collections and are so pleasing for their color.
