Chinese Archaistic Jade Rhyton "Phoenix" Cup
A fascinating Chinese jade archaistic rhyton cup drawing on Han and Ming models for inspiration. It features a cup emerging from a phoenix or possibly Heavenly Bird, with scales and intricately carved plumage, the back of which rests on coiled feathers. The front depicts a mythical beast before the bird.
The jade has a smooth vitreous finish, worked on a dark green to black stone. Our best determination of date is that it is 20th C. telescoping both Ming and Han elements into a single composition. This dark jade would make a fantastic foil to white and light jades. 5 3/4" h. Excellent condition.
