Robert Bate Antique Brass Surveyors Transit with Box
An antique brass surveyor transit made by Robert Bate (1782 - 1847) of London, an optician who was an Optician in Ordinary to King George IV and Queen Victoria, as well as Master of the Spectaclemakers' Guild.
This transit includes a mount and 12" scope. It has tarnishes in various spots, without being distracting for an object made circa 1825. All of the screws work. There could be missing pins. A few miscellaneous items are loose from the device, and I will honestly tell you that I am not certain where to attach them. It includes one level.
Quite happily it retains its original box and key, though I have not attempted to lock the box.
Compared to similar examples I have seen, this specimen is superior condition. Some screws require tightening.
The compass face is marked Bate London.
