These magnificent Empire or Regency tazzas are composed of the finest design and craftsmanship capturing the neoclassical motifs made popular by the excavations in the Near and Middle East which started in earnest in the late 18th century.

The base is triangular lifted by paw feet above which stand cherubic girls bearing baskets of produce. Behind them are scrolling stalks which uphold circular rim, decorated with serpentine ribbons to which are fastened observant angels. The bowls, if not lavers, crown the majestic base.

These tazzas were produced by the English firm of Elkington & Co and are so marked. A set of initials is stamped into the underside near one of the feet. Based upon stylistic considerations, I date these superb pieces to c. 1840 although the firm did not begin doing business with this name until 1841. However Elkington & Co was a continuing successor partnership of a going concern.

The condition of the tazzas are generally good to very good with the main deficiency being the loss of gilding on the figures and in the bowls, and 3-4 missing screws to the underside. However, the tazzas are firm and sound.

These tazzas will bring an understated but noticeable elegance to your surroundings and elicit edifying conversation.
