Antique English Porcelain Tureen by Derby
This porcelain masterpiece was produced by the famous British firm commonly known as Royal Crown Derby a name owing to the trademark featuring the royal crown patented to the firm by George III.
The designers spared no expense in the production of this lavish rarity which stands stout on 4 paw feet reminiscent of the Chippendale style. The bowl is carefully and brilliantly painted with roses, vines, and fern leaves in gold. The legs and handles are accompanied by gilded lions, a theme continued on the lid handle. The gadrooned rimmed lid has gold borders above and below as it sits on the bowl. One end of the lid accommodates a ladle. Of special interest are the subtle creases on the lid and bowl.
The underside is painted with an early Derby mark which dates this tureen to about 1825.
Dimensions: 14" w, 10" d, 9.5" h
The general condition of this luxury tureen is excellent if not superb. The main defect is the loss of gilding on the high points of the lions on the body of the bowl.
