Mid 19th Century Figurative Bronze Sculpture of Penelope Waiting for Odysseus by Gustave Trouillard

This bronze is a remarkably detailed depiction of Penelope waiting for Odysseus. This subject was not uncommon in the 19th C. as attested by a similar example by Pierre Jules-Cavelier. Trouillard elongates the pose and has her hand on the basket. The folds in the dress, the detail of the coiffure, the drapery on the chair, and so many other fine details underscore the quality of this 19th C. bronze which spared no expense in telling its story. The basket and robe over the chair are separately cast and attached to the main bronze body. The underside reveals screws and pegs of early to mid 19th origin. This neoclassical triumph should be an easy selection as a component of a finely appointed home. The bronze is signed Trouillard. The artist Trouillard - a very odd name - is inscribed in the side of the chair. There is no foundry mark. I assume the country of origin to be France. Those who know French will suspect that the name is a pseudonym of an artist who wished to remain anonymous. Dimensions: 16" w, 6" d, 11" h A screw is missing but does not affect the stability of the bronze. There may be minor random patina loss.
