A shallow bowl with a molded the white flower (magnolia ?), an everted rim and a high foot. The fine porcelain, the comb decorated foot, cloud border on the rim and the stylized flowers on the outer side of the bowl are typical of Hirado porcelain made in the style of the earlier Nabeshima kilns. All of the decoration, including the characters on the bottom, is underglaze blue. 8 ½ inches (21.5 cm) diameter and 2 inches (5 cm) tall.

A very well modeled porcelain teacup with a delicate loop handle hand painted with a red bodied bird perched on a branch in a fanciful landscape with a fence in the background. Hand painted puce flowers on either side of the handle and in the bottom of the cup. Unmarked but the porcelain and the bird décor are characteristically Ansbach circa 1780. 4 inches (10 cm) across the handle, 3 ¼ inches (8 cm) diameter, 2 inches (5 cm) height.

David Teniers the Younger (Dutch 1610-1690) copper plate engraving of men and perhaps a woman gathered around a table in a house with a rough floor, a bed alcove and some implements on shelves and hooks. The focus of the print is a man playing a violin while a standing man with drink in hand addresses him, perhaps singing, as is a seated man. An intertwined double handled large sauceboat decorated with flowers on both the inside and the outside. Gilding on the base, handles and on the rim with dentil decoration on the outside edge. 3 3/4 inches (9.5 cm) tall, 9 inches (23 cm) long and 7 ¼ inches (18 cm) across the handles. Circa 1780.

Condition: no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. Gilding wear around the rim and especially on the handles.

SOLD Porcelain underglaze blue painted dinner plate decorated in a direct steal from Worcester with the “pine cone” pattern. The form of the plate is slightly different than the Worcester form but design and border are a close copy. Worcester is done with a transfer prints whereas this plate is hand painted and the porcelain is hard paste as opposed to soft paste. Since the pattern being copied is from around 1780 this plate is probably circa 1790. 9 1/8 inches (23 cm) diameter.

A porcelain ovoid form teapot with a floral knop and hand painted with floral sprays on either side and floral sprigs on above and below the handle, picked out with magenta, and on the spout as well as above and below. The crossed hayforks with a line through them was the factory mark for the late 198th century. Height 5 1/8 inches (13 cm), length across spout and handle 7 ¼ inches (18.4 cm) and width 4 ½ inches (11.4 cm).

A pair of tall Sheffield plate candlesticks with conforming bobeche. On round bases with lines alternating with elongated ovals up the base, column and socket. This style was current around 1800. The wear or “bleed” where the copper shows is on the high places. They are 12 inches (30.5 cm) tall and 5 ½ inches (14 cm) diameter at the base. No marks. Probably English.

A hand painted porcelain Japanese bowl in the style of earlier Nabeshima high footed shallow bowls. The blue is painted underglaze and the green and brown are painted over the glaze in enamels. Bodhidharma was a Buddhist who came to China in the 5th or 6th century and is credited with the founding of Chan Buddhism which in Japan became Zen Buddhism. A pair of hand painted English porcelain dessert serving dishes, probably Spode, lozenge shaped with lobes and decorated with floral sprays and sprigs in bright colors with gilt scalloped border and gilt floral design in the apexes. No marks on the base, but this form with the elegant gilding in the apexes is ascribed to Spode and from early in the 19th century. Length 10 ¼, width 7 ¼ and height 2 inches.

Condition: No chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. Almost no wear.

A green glazed hand thrown pottery vase signed on the bottom, “W N/OWEN” (Walter Nelson Owen 1895- 1981) with the original retail paper label reading, “Hand Made For/PETER MURPHEY/HWY. 191 . P. O. Box 653/HENDERSONVILLE, N.C.” Peter Murphey ran a small ad in The Transylvania Times, of Brevard N.C. June 3, 1965 advertising a continuous Craftsmans Fair at his address. A hard paste porcelain shallow bowl commonly used for salad with a dentil gilt rim and hand painted with bouquets and sprays of flowers. The simplicity of the painting is not an indication of poor work, there was at times a fashion for simple looking things; think of Marie Antoinette at her dairy at Versailles. This bowl is from the same period. 8 1/4 inch (21 cm) diameter.

Dinner plate in Sevres pattern but probably Minton c. 1850

A soft paste porcelain dinner plate unmarked, but probably Minton. In the “feuille de choux” pattern with hand painted flowers, blue accents and heavy gilding. These knock offs of 18th century Sevres were popular from the mid 19th century (c.1850) onwards and Minton made many of the very good ones. 9 ½ inches (24 cm) diameter.

Condition: no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. This plate looks as if it was never used.

A pair of molded edge porcelain dessert serving bowls, Spode circa 1814 with bat transferred fruit in the center. Pattern number 1686. Neither is marked, but the distinctive border of twined dolphins alternating with a large plant (?) is a Spode design. The pattern of fruits is currently made by Spode and called “Chatham.” The border is set off with a band of gilding at the rim and the inside edge. 2 piece printed and hand colored Mason’s ironstone strainer dish c. 1840 A twelve sided shallow strainer that sits on a twelve sided bowl. The strainer form in delft is sometimes referred to as a cress bowl or a strawberry bowl. It’s possible that this one was meant to hold ice in the bottom as well as catch the water running off the fruit in the strainer. Two albumen photographs of the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Dualah at Agra, India. Neither is signed and though they are probably by different photographers they complement each other as one is a close up of the tomb while the other gives it some context in the surrounding garden.

Albumen photograph mounted on a card and titled in ink in script under it, “Bheel women grinding Bajri.” The Bhil are a large group of people from west India including Gujarat where pearl millet is called bijri. The photograph shows a group of men and women including a woman seated by a grinding stone posing for the photograph. The image is 7 5/8 x 9 3/8 inches (19.3 x 24 cm) and the card 11 x 14 inches (28 x 35,5 cm).
