A vintage gelatin silver photograph of a gate and the street beyond with people beyond at the town of Sidi Okba, Algeria. Identified in ink on the back. Rene Prouho (1879-1970) blue back stamp in the upper left corner. 11 5/8 x 9 ½ inches (29.5 x 24 cm). Unmounted.

Condition; very good, though the corners are bruised.

I would guess it dates from the 1930’s.

A tightly hooked rug, American, perhaps Amish, from the 1930’s. Wool on burlap with hand attached black cotton backing. 29 inches long by 22 inches wide. The unusual free hand pattern shows black stars with pale blue crosses in an integrated geometric pattern.

Condition: Overall excellent condition with one professional darned repair on the border between one star and cross (see close up image). One tiny loss of a hooked tuft, a little wear at one edge otherwise very clean with good ...

A nice watercolor portrait of a young man, probably in his mid-teens, signed, “Elinor M. Barnard/1933.” The young man with brown hair and eyes wearing an open necked white shirt leans into the picture plane with a sense of youthful eagerness. Mason Wells American 1906-1984 large watercolor on paper of a figure of a woman walking on the deck of a passenger liner with the funnel and other parts of the vessel. Painted over pencil. On the back is written, “MASON WELLS/ maybe/ S.S. Berengaria/ when Student at/ Harvard.” Sight size 20 ¾ by 13 ¾ inches. Frame 28 by 20 ¾ inches.

Condition. Excellent. Frame has minor knocks. New acid free backing.

Signed in pencil lower right, “Dolice” and located in pencil lower left, “Washington Square N.Y.” Good crisp print, overall size 13 1/8 by 9 5/8 inches. The image 11 by 8 inches. Straight horizontal line hooked rug depicting Labrador in the center and Newfoundland in the upper left with whales, sailboats, seals and steamboats in the ocean as well as a compass rose in the lower left corner.. Large folk art hooked cotton rug of a maroon horse outlined in black and with black hooves and tail trotting to the left against a tan ground with maroon corners and blue bands to enclose the horse. Some of the ground hooked in squares of different shades. Dots of brown for nose, eye and in the tail. 22 by 35 inches.

Condition: some wear and small losses around edges, stain at the edge above the horses head and below raised hoof. Three spots of wax in the upper right corner.

A well executed watercolor and gouache on paper titled on the back, with an indecipherable monogram and the date in the lower left. Excellent color and good perspective it was probably done by a professional artist, if only I could read the monogram. London framers label on the back of the back board. Image 24 by 18 ¾ inches.

A very nicely painted delicate porcelain cup, saucer and cup cover painted predominantly with carp but including a lobster and a couple of fish. All three pieces have elaborate painted borders. Gilding is used on the carp and the borders. The two handled cup is marked in red with a stamp, “CHINA” inside an oval. A well painted oil on board landscape of green fields in the foreground and a tan one in the distance with a group of trees on the left under a cloudy blue sky. The frame is a molded gilt frame. It is a good size; 19 inches tall by 21 ½ inches wide. With frame it is 26 ½ inches by 24 inches.

Condition is excellent with a recent cleaning and new frame.

A sepia toned silver print of a Bedouin shepherd with his flock grazing on sparsely covered ground below a hill. In the lower right corner is the blind stamp, “American Colony/Jerusalem.” The original dates from around 1920 and this would appear to be a print of roughly that age. The Number 161 is stamped on the back. The photograph is 8 ¼ x 11 ¼ inches includes a thin margin.

A large oil on canvas by Henry Charles Lee (American, 1864-1930) titled on the stretcher, “Winter Landscape” and signed lower left “Henry C. Lee.” He lived in Cornwall New York and in France, where he died. The stretcher had an old label for a French artist supplies dealer Lucien LeFevre-Foinet with the number 7350.

Andrew Thomas Schwartz (American, 1867-1942) oil on canvas of a hilly landscape with the morning mist rising off the more distant hills. A few evergreens, probably cedars, sit in the field that appears to be tan with autumn. The only sign of habitation is a low stone wall. A hand painted porcelain Japanese bowl in the style of earlier Nabeshima high footed shallow bowls. The blue is painted underglaze and the green and brown are painted over the glaze in enamels. Bodhidharma was a Buddhist who came to China in the 5th or 6th century and is credited with the founding of Chan Buddhism which in Japan became Zen Buddhism. A late 19th or early 20th century sterling silver sauce ladle with a round bowl, marked on the back of the handle, “STERLING, J.E. CALDWELL & (the rest of the punch missing) PATENT.” The front of the handle decorated with a long tailed bird (Jay?) in foliage. On the back is more foliage, the marks, and the engraved initial “F.” Approx. 7 inches long. Approx. 60 grams. Condition: Some wear. Decoration still crisp. J.E. Caldwell were a major Philadelphia maker and retailer.

A shallow bowl with a molded the white flower (magnolia ?), an everted rim and a high foot. The fine porcelain, the comb decorated foot, cloud border on the rim and the stylized flowers on the outer side of the bowl are typical of Hirado porcelain made in the style of the earlier Nabeshima kilns. All of the decoration, including the characters on the bottom, is underglaze blue. 8 ½ inches (21.5 cm) diameter and 2 inches (5 cm) tall.
