An oil on mahogany panel of a Claudian landscape with trees to the far left above figures approaching a river, while figures on the opposite side stand beneath a rise in the landscape with mountains in the distance under a cloudy sky. The composition and manner suggest a late painting by the Scottish Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840) or possibly his eldest son Patrick Nasmyth (1787-1831), though the brush strokes are looser than usual for either. 8 11/16 x10 ¾ with margin, 7 1/8 x 10 1/8 w/out...

A print titled, “LE DEPART D’UNE FIORE” on heavy paper with the colors brown blue red/pink and black on white paper. Sometimes I find it difficult to determine if the colors have been applied to a single plate or if the print has been made with a separate plate for each color. This print feels as if it was printed with more than one plate because of the mixing of colors in some places and the clean separation in others. Bonnet was an early printer using separate plates, which is the more t...

An interesting color printed engraving of George Washington published in London in 1798 by Robert Cribb, Holborn, engraved by William Nutter after a painting by Gilbert Stuart purported to belong to J.S. DeFranca of Devonshire Place. Devonshire Place is a part of London, but a quick search did not turn up a J.S. DeFranca and it is possible that this print is a copy of another print of Washington, based on the Lansdowne portrait by Gilbert Stuart. It is printed on laid paper and the fact that it ...
