Hand colored lithograph titled, “THE BATTERY, NEW YORK/BY MOONLIGHT.” N. Currier lower left, address lower right. Promenade under the leafy trees with the full moon lighting the harbor with sailing vessels. Kennedy Galleries label taken from the earlier back board, now on the new backing. Sight size 9 x 12 ½ inches, over all with frame, 16 1/8 x 19 1/8 inches.

Condition: Minor tears in the margins and some slight discoloration, but otherwise good condition.

One of 12 lithographs published by Ackermann London, in 1840/41 as part of a portfolio, “12 Views in the Interior of Guiana.” The original sketches were made by John Morrison who accompanied Sir Robert Hermann Schomburgk on the exploration into what would become British Guiana. The sketches were developed by Charles Bentley into the drawings that were the basis for the lithographs. Printed in black with hand coloring.

Japanese woodblock print by Kunitero Utagawa (1808-1876) in three sheets, depicting the war council of the forty seven ronin. These ronin, the loyal retainers, had been Samurai in the service of Lord Asano when he was obligated to commit seppuku for drawing his sword at the Palace of the Shogun. Drawn with pencil on bluish heavy laid paper with ink, ink washes, touches of white gouche and faded washes of green. In 1835 Lear visited Ireland, one of his early trips as he turned from bird illustration to landscape. The party he traveled with visited Glendalough. An interesting color printed engraving of George Washington published in London in 1798 by Robert Cribb, Holborn, engraved by William Nutter after a painting by Gilbert Stuart purported to belong to J.S. DeFranca of Devonshire Place. Devonshire Place is a part of London, but a quick search did not turn up a J.S. A large etching titled, “Veduta della Gran Curia Innocenziana,” (View of the Palazzo di Monetcitorio) part of Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s folio of Views of Rome, first published in 1752. The etchings were often reproduced, but this one has both the correct heavy laid paper with appropriate watermark and the center crease where it was folded into the original folio.
