A watercolor with pencil and pen and ink showing the Arch of Janus in the foreground on the right with the tower and a porch of the Church of Saint George’s in Velabro Rome a little further back on the left. Written on the old backboard “S. Giorgio – Roma/ Augustus Hare” and a card on added to it fairly recently, probably when it was reframed, “S. Giorgio in Rome/ Dec. 1863/ William Augustus Hare.” This is either a mistake in transcription, a dubious addition, or the homage to William Augustus Hare, who was the uncle of Augustus John Cuthbert Hare who is almost certainly the artist. William Augustus Hare was buried in Rome. Augustus J.C. Hare was a noted travel writer and used his drawings in his publications. Sight size 9 ¾ 6 5/8 inches (24.6 x 16.8 cm) Frame 17 x 13 ½ inches (43.2 x 34.3 cm).
Condition: Good with a small amount of foxing.
