A set of tiles with a letter of the alphabet on each tile; one side with the small letter and the other side with it in capitals. Interestingly the small “s” is in the form of a small “f”, known as a “long s.” Its use was archaic by the early 19th century and since these types of tiles are thought to be used to teach spelling it seems likely that they would date from no later than the early 19th century. The box in which they came is later, though the map of the Azores which is used to paper the inside of the box is from 1791. The set is complete and the calligraphy for each letter looks the same, though the “x” tile is smaller than the others and size varies slightly. Th “z” tile is approx. ¾ inches tall and ½ inches wide. The box is 4 3/8 inches square by ¾ inches tall. Probably English.

Condition: good, no tiles broken and all but the “v” have good ink in the letter.
