Two pairs of plates with underglaze blue transfer decoration of a woman holding a tray of cakes with a child pulling at her dress and an oriental jardinière to one side surrounded with an elaborate floral swagged border. The smaller are more like shallow bowls than like plates. These two are porcelain and both marked with Hilditch and Sons mark for the period 1822-1830. The larger plates have overglaze lustre highlights and are not porcelain. I suspect that they are slightly later very close imitations of the porcelain. I’ve seen this pattern referred to as “Eskimo Child,” but given the motifs pseudo Oriental would be closer.
Condition: the Hilditch pair are without blemish except for a few light knife scratches. The lustred one have no chips, cracks hairlines or repairs but one has three pits in the well of the plate and a small area of glaze loss on the rim.
Though imitation took place frequently finding two nearly identical designs in different bodies is unusual.
