Late 18th to early 19th century boxwood netsuke of an oni holding a buddhist reliquary in his hands as he floats on a boat shaped cloud. Very unusual subject, superb early carving, very powerful face, beautiful depiction of swirling cloud texture. Triple himotoshi - 2 holes on the bottom and one in the back, appear to be original. Very beautiful warm patina, wonderful feel of age. Height 1 13/16 inches.
