1930s Japanese scroll depicting four Zodiac animals - horse, boar, mouse and snake - around a tree. Must have been part of a set of paintings depicting grouping of Zodiac animals. Ink and colors on silk, excellent detailing, beautiful brushwork - see the depiction of hair, scales, grass and leaves. Signed CHIKUREI SENSHI followed by 2 artist’s seals, one more seal in the lower right corner. Seems to have be remounted recently in excellent brocade silk mounts, bone scroll ends (loss to the central plug on one, not visible when scroll is hanging, can be easily fixed), overall in great condition. Scroll size 77x18 inches, painting size 53x13 inches.
