Rather unusual 19th century Chinese scholar’s box for small items (such as ink cakes) with metal body and cloisonne decoration on the top, bottom and sides depicting numerous scholar’s objects. The body of the box is copper, the bands on the outside are paktong - an alloy made of copper, nickel and zinc used in China in 18th and 19th centuries. Wonderful quality depiction of vases, books, scholar’s rock, double gourd, scepter and peach branches, a few small losses that do not take away from the piece. Well fitted hinged cover, beautiful patina. Very nice object for a scholar’s desk. Size 2 5/16 x 1 11/16 x 1 3/16 inches.
