19th century netsuke of seated Sennin Tobosaku showing off a huge peach of Immortality which he stole from Seiobo, the Chinese Queen of the Fairies. The Peach of Immortality ripens on a tree in her garden only once in 3 thousand years. Superbly carved, excellent face of portrait quality, elegant flow to the lines of his robe, beautiful wear consistent with age. Judging by the style of carving, the look of the face, type of staining and etched decoration on his robe, the piece was carved by Shukosai ANRAKU - the artist is discussed on p. 295 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Great sculpture. Height 1 1/4 inches.
