19th century netsuke of a snarling tigress as she protectively places a paw over her cub. Great facial expressions, beautiful fur texture with excellent etching of hair including darker stripes, powerful paws. Cord hole is formed by natural opening in the carving. Wonderful rhythm to the flow of their tails, eyes are double inlaid with light and dark horn, beautiful staining and patina, old age lines. Signed HAKURYU in gourd shaped reserve on the back of the mother for Hakuryu II - this brilliant artist is listed on p. 438 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick.
