18th century netsuke of a recumbent deer with its young who tries to climb on the back of the parent. Wonderfully captured mood of the scene, very cleverly designed - their horns are perfectly carved, yet they do not stick out to be broken off. Wonderful detailing, excellent hairwork with beautifully depicted spots on their coats, Old age lines, warm yellow patina, differently sized deep himotoshi in accordance with the habit of the time. Signed TOMOKAZU in oval reserve on the bottom - for information on the artist see NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick, p. 1153. Excellent netsuke. Comes from the collection of His Royal Highness Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester - a tag is attached. Length 1 3/4 inches.
