19th century netsuke of a seated monkey holding a wild wasp’s nest with one hand and a wing of an insect with the other. Superb carving to the last detail: see its amazing face with double inlaid eyes, ears, fingernails, the wasp and its nest texture with couple of open cells where larvae have already hatched. Excellent hairwork, himotoshi formed by its left leg, is perfect condition. Signed MASAAKI in oval reserve on the bottom - the artist is listed in NETSUKE by Neil Davey (p. 489, number 1377). Wonderful sculpture. Comes from the collection of His Royal Highness Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester - a tag is attached. Height 1 1/8 inches.
