19th century/Meiji period Japanese Satsuma ceramic tokkuri - sake bottle - with enamel decoration of an actor dressed as an armed samurai wearing an angry mask, and a kneeling man on the other side of the bottle. Excellent quality detailed painting, great face. Typical Satsuma earthenware body, beautiful finely crackled glaze, signed BIZAN on the bottom. There is also a 2-character inscription on the side by the bottom - most probably it is the name of the play in which painted figures are acting. Some staining throughout the surface adding character and feel of age to the piece, overall in excellent condition. Height 5 3/4 inches.
