19th century netsuke of Gentoku mounted on his horse Tokiro reaching the other bank of the river Dankei while escaping from a castle besieged by his brother-in-law. Gentoku (Chao Lieh Ti in Chinese) was a Chinese Emperor, and one of the Three Heroes of Han Dynasty together with Kwanyu and Chohi. Excellent detailing - see the fierce expression on his face, his billowing robe, bamboo stick in his hand, elaborate trappings of the horse and beautiful depiction of cresting waves. Excellent wear and patina. Signed KINRYUSAI TOMOTANE followed by a seal in oval reserve on the bottom - the netsuke and signature are illustrated on p. 1165 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Excellent netsuke by rare artist, comes from Jack Mang Collection. Height 1 1/2 inches.
