19th century boxwood netsuke of a seated puppy with its head turned left and its tongue sticking out. Superb face, excellent depiction of its chubby bulk and paws, ears are cleverly turned down to provide for fewer protruding parts, beautiful hairwork. Wonderful curl to its tail, eyes are inlaid with dark horn, superb staining and patina. Signed MASAYOSHI for Sato Masayoshi in rectangular reserve on the bottom - this excellent artist is listed on p. 742 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Great netsuke by the master carver. Height 1 inch.
