Late Meiji - early Taisho netsuke of a resting horse, it head turned back as it neighs, teeth bared. Superbly carved, great face, eyes are double inlaid with light and dark horn, beautiful flow to its mane, wonderful depiction of its feet and hooves. Signed RANTEI on the bottom for Hogen Rantei - the artist is listed on p. 865 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Hogen is an honorary title conferred for excellence in painting and sculpture. I believe netsuke to be a copy probably made by someone from Rantei’s workshop. Excellent sculpture. Length 1 5/8 inches.
