19th century sagemono set consisting of tobakoire (tobacco box, or inro with just one compartment), bodhi tree pit ojime and kurumi (natural walnut shell) netsuke. Netsuke is very cleverly made out of one piece naturally representing a turtle with its head sticking out of the carapace. The material of tobakoire is natural burl with superb play of wood colors from light brown to black and textures wonderfully resembling swirling clouds. Brass lip to the mouth with loops on the inside for a silk cord. Netsuke is carved in low relief with a flowering prunus branch on the front and with a large flower on the back that serves as one of himotoshi. Fantastic patina on wood from handling. Excellent piece in Japanese taste with great feel. Box height with cover 2 1/2 inches, netsuke height 1 1/4 inches.
