Good size 19th century netsuke of a standing sennin (Chinese sage) in a robe and a leaf cape, carrying on his back a boy wearing an extremely long and sumptious robe. The netsuke most probably was carved by an artist from the Yoshinaga School. Unusual subject, portrait quality carving of their faces, beautiful flowing lines of their robe, great detailing of leaf cape, wonderful texture to his beard. Superb quality etching of textile patterns, black and red ink highlights, warm yellow patina, especially on the back where netsuke was touching the silk of kimono. Two smaller toes on his right foot were broken off and reattached really well, it would not bother me as a restoration. Very well balanced - stands on its own, old age lines. Excellent sculpture. Height 3 1/4 inches (83 mm).
