Late 19th century Japanese wooden kiseruzutsu (tobacco pipe holder) in a shape of a carp turning into dragon. The face is already that of a dragon, while the reserves on the side show scales that are still those of a fish. According to a Chinese myth a carp that can swim up the waterfall turns into a dragon, and thus serves as a paragon of perseverance, especially in scholarly pursuits. Wonderful design, elegant shape, beautiful crisp carving, eyes are inlaid with dark horn, black staining with cleverly unstained areas highlighting scales on the sides. Dragon’s horn forms an opening for hanging the piece, carved openings for a pipe, superb patina and sheen to the surface, very pleasant to handle. Great subtle piece in Japanese taste. Length 8 1/8 inches.
