19th century netsuke of a recumbent ox. Finely carved, its hooves bent beneath its body, wearing a halter with a woven straw collar and a length of rope lying across its back, eyes are inlaid with dark horn, wonderful rendition of animal’s bulk and fur. Large differently sized deep himotoshi, beautiful staining, excellent patina, very pleasant to handle. Signed TOMOTADA in rectangular reserve on the bottom - the artist is Eirakusai Tomotada of Edo from Tomochika School, and is listed on p. 1160 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Excellent netsuke, rare artist. Length 2 inches.
