Late 18th to early 19th century netsuke of rakan Handaka Sonja standing with one foot raised, wearing a tattered robe with leaf cape and skirt and holding a large bowl out of which with emerges a dragon who affectionately wraps itself around the rakan’s shoulders. The subject is Arhat Panthaka - one of the most capable disciples of Buddha, who subjugated the Dragon King, and is usually portrayed with a dragon. Excellent strong early carving of typical 18th century triangular section, , wonderful faces, great depiction of scales and leaves, superb patina turning deeper yellow on the back, deep himotoshi, old collection number in ink on the back (can be easily removed by alcohol if needed). The foot that he stands on is an old and very well done replacement, well balanced - stands on its own on flat surface. Height 2 7/16 inches.
