Wooden netsuke of a seated monkey biting into a kaki (persimmon) fruit with a brunch holding two more fruit in front of it. Perfectly captured mood of the scene, wonderful sense of volume. Superbly carved to the last detail - see its face with mouth screwed to one side for a better bite, well defined fingers and toes and finely incised coat, eyes are inlaid with black horn. Anatomically correct private parts, himotoshi formed by its left leg, wonderful patina. Signed MASANAO SHINZAN on the bottom - for discussion of the last of Masanao of Ise carvers (born in 1904) see p. 725 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Excellent sculpture. Height 1 1/2 inches.
