19th century Japanese kozuka (sword knife) handle depicting standing Tekkai Sennin wearing tattered robe and blowing out his spirit which can be seen on the back of the piece as a small figure flying on his staff in mid-air. Tekkai Sennin had the power to separate his spirit from his body and send it to heaven. During one of his long absences his body was buried, so upon his return he had to enter the body of a dead beggar, and that is the way he is usually shown. Excellent crisp work, superb depiction of his face, feet and woven gaiters, gilding, in great condition. Signed on the back KAWAKATSU NORIKAZU (alternative reading is Kawakatsu Jowa) followed by kakihan (carved monogram) of the artist. Length 3 7/8 inches.
