19th century wooden netsuke of an actor in a role of shojo wearing richly decorated robe and typical shojo wig, and holding a folded fan in his hand. Shojo are mythical creatures living near the sea, and are particularly fond of sake. Extraordinary carving with minute detailing - see the beautiful texture of the wig as well as features of the mask and textile patterns. Beautiful flow to the lines of his robe, excellent patina. Signed JUGYOKU on the bottom - for a lengthy discussion of this superb carver see p. 546 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Excellent netsuke by the master carver, all that a great netsuke shall be. Height 1 7/16 inches.
