Very unusual tall boxwood netsuke of a rather acrobatic male Ashinaga (long legs) standing on his elbows with his feet up as an unusual female Tenaga (long arms) stands on the back of his head. Superbly carved to the last detail - see their fingernails, breasts, structures of muscles and extended limbs, hair textures, extraordinary portrait quality faces. Beautiful even grained material, excellent finish, himotoshi is formed by natural openings between their limbs on the back. Signed KOSEI on the back and HIDEYUKI on an inlaid golden plaque next to it - for a lengthy discussion of this superb carver see LIVING MASTERS OF NETSUKE by Miriam Kinsey, pp. 39-45. An identical model by the artist is illustrated in Christie’s New York sale IMPORTANT JAPANESE NETSUKE AND INRO on October 2, 1984, lot 218. Height 5 1/2 inches (141 mm).
