Early 19c staghorn netsuke CHOKWARO HORSE in gourd
Listed Price $395.00
Unusual early 19th century staghorn netsuke of a double gourd containing a moveable horse the head of which can slide in and out of the gourd. The gourd is an attribute of Chokwaro sennin (Chinese sage), who could summon the magic horse out of his gourd to be transported wherever he wanted. Clever carving utilizing natural features of a stag antler to represent decaying areas of the gourd, very pleasant wear and patina. Himotoshi (cord opening) is formed by a vine of the gourd, darker areas as is usual with staghorn, which, in fact, makes it so attractive. Very pleasant feel of age to the piece. Length with horse hidden 1 7/8 inches.
