19th century boxwood netsuke of a boy kneeling to tie his straw sandal while holding a sake jar by a cord in his teeth. Superb carving capturing a tiny moment in life, brilliantly depicted essence of the scene. Beautifully carved, wonderful face, wonderful flow to the lines of his robe, excellent patina. Signed RAKUMIN on the side of the jar for Hogen Rakumin. Hogen is an honorary title conferred for excellence in painting and sculpture.
