19th century netsuke of Goshisho, the general and counselor to the king, who was famous both for his literary skills and incredible physical strength. He is usually shown holding a huge bronze incense burner over his head with one hand, while writing a poem with the other. There is an unusual addition - a surprised courtier with his hands raised in amazement. Superb quality carving, excellent detailing - see the demon masks on the feet of the incense burner, great faces, finely incised textile patterns and flying sleeves of Goshisho’s robe. Beautiful patina, excellent patina. Signed SHUOSAI on the bottom - this wonderful carver from Hidemasa school is discussed on p. 1066 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Excellent netsuke, rare carver. Height 1 5/8 inches.
