Late 18th to early 19th century Kyoto school netsuke depicting a seated wolf with its paw on a severed leg of a deer. This subject is almost always carved in wood, and wolves tend to be skinny and somewhat stylized. This one has a full volume body, excellently depicted coat, powerful paws and great face with a chunk of meat hanging to one side of its mouth and all its teeth visible, eyes are inlaid with black horn, old repaired nick to the top of its left ear. Excellent wear and patina, himotoshi (cord hole) is formed by natural opening in the carving. Great sculpture. Length 1 15/16 inches.
