19th century wooden netsuke of a Buddhist gong (a flat bronze type used in temples) inlaid on the top with Oni no Nembutsu (a demon who saw the light of Buddhist teachings and became pious) wearing a monk’s robe and holding a gong striker in his hand. Unusual variation of the subject, staghorn and ebony inlays, great face, wonderful rhythm to the folds of the robe, very beautiful wear and patina. Ink inscription on the underside (have not been able to read it), himotoshi formed by a loop on the underside. Comes from the collection of His Royal Highness Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester - a tag is attached. Diameter 1 1/2 inches.
