Early 19th century netsuke of a cat on an upturned bowl containing a very fat octopus tentacle, part of it showing outside the bowl causing serious interest of the animal. Superb quality netsuke, fantastic face, excellently carved and etched bottom of the bowl representing an irregular unglazed foot of the vessel. Great depiction of suction cups and cat’s collar. Beautiful wear and patina, signed MASAKAZU in an oval reserve - the artist is discussed on p. 707 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. The carver is the first one on the Meinertzhagen list reproduced on page 708. Superb netsuke. Length 1 7/16 inches.
