Excellent boxwood netsuke of Shoki the Demon Queller standing over a pinned down terrified oni and threatening it with a long sword. Superbly carved to the last detail - see their extraordinary quality faces, tendons of their hands, oni’s muscle structures, flowing lines of Shoki’s robe. Beautiful even grained material, excellent finish, himotoshi is formed by the sword scabbard on the back. Signed HIDEYUKI on an inlaid golden plaque on the back - for a lengthy discussion of this superb carver see LIVING MASTERS OF NETSUKE by Miriam Kinsey, pp. 39-45. Comes with original tomobako - wooden storage box inscribed on the outside, signed and bearing a red seal by the artist on the inside (see the detail in lower right corner on the first photo). Height 2 3/8 inches.
