Early Showa period (1910s) Japanese mingei (Arts and Crafts) copper box with chased and enameled decoration of an ogival reserve containing a flowering tulip and a gnarled pomegranate bush with fruits by a twisted rock. Comes with a matching tray. Wonderful combination of uchidashi (hammered-out) and moriage (piled-up) techniques: metal was raised from the opposite side and raised surface was subsequently heavily enameled and fired. Crisp work with thickly laid enamel, beautifully applied multiple colors, wonderful textured surface of the box and the tray, perfectly riveted corners, excellent patina, in great condition. Lined on the inside of both body and lid with rough cotton cloth decorated with golden patches. Crisply marked on the bottom with Ando factory mark and signed ANDO TSUKURU (made by Ando) - it is unusual to see signed Ando piece. Box length 5 3/4 inches, width 4 inches, tray length 7 1/4 inches, width 5 3/4 inches.
