Rare subject early 19th century netsuke of a mythical animal suisei - a creature with a single horn and a tortoise's carapace on the back, flames licking the sides of its body. It sits on an oval base, its head turned to its right, wonderful inquisitive face. Great inquisitive face, wonderful depiction of its tail and bumpy carapace, pupils are inlaid with bronze. Fantastic sheen from wear, superb patina, very pleasant to hold. Comes from Jack Mang Collection. For a suisei carved by the same hand see Sotheby’s Bushell sale catalog of March 21, 2000, lot 136, where it is erroneously called kirin. Height 1 9/16 inches.
