18th century small votive Indian bronze sculpture depicting the mother goddess Durga cutting off the head of Buffalo Demon Mahishasura, with her vehicle - a roaring lion - under her right foot. Durga is the most powerful female deity in the Hindu pantheon. She has bladed weapons symbolic of the attributes of all the gods given to her to slay the demon in her three hands, and holds the severed head of the demon by its hair with the fourth. Great bronze with wonderful casting and detailing, beautiful patina and wear, strong feel of age. Height 2 7/16 inches.
