Late Meiji (1880s-1910s) Japanese chaire (tea caddy for storing powdered green tea used in tea ceremony) of daikai shape (literally meaning “big ocean” and of large diameter in comparison to its height and with a wide mouth). Buff stoneware body, beautiful variegated brown glaze with black and blue areas. I believe the piece to be Tamba ware, stamped with the seal of the potter by the bottom. Old turned cover lined with gold leaf paper on the inside. Beautiful piece in great condition, height with cover 1 7/8 inches.
