Pair 19c okimono ROOSTER & HEN netsuke carver SUKESADA original box
Listed Price $695.00
Very unusual pair of late 19th century 2-colored chosen matsu (Korean pine wood) okimono of a rooster and a hen with eggs in original tomobako (wooden box made for the items and signed by the carver). Superbly carved in ittobori (one cut) style characteristic of Hida school of netsuke carvers with clever use of wood structure, texture and color (see lighter colored comb of the rooster and the eggs in front of the hen) as elements of design. Excellently conveyed characters of the creatures, eyes are inlaid with black horn, in great condition, fantastic patina. Signed SUKESADA ZO (made by Sukesada) on the bottom of the rooster - for information on the artist see NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick, p. 1049. Comes in 2 silk wrapping cloths in the original box extensively inscribed by the artist and bearing 2 red paste seals. Height of the rooster 2 3/16 inches.
