18th century votive Indian bronze sculpture depicting bare breasted goddess Durga sitting on a raised base and holding various implements in her 8 arms. This particular form of the goddess is called Mahishasuramardini and is recognizable by the number of her arms. Durga is the warrior goddess, whose mythology centers around combating evil and demonic forces that threaten peace, prosperity and dharma of the good. She is the fierce form of the protective mother goddess, willing to unleash her anger against wrong, violence for liberation and destruction to empower creation. Mahishasuramardini form was taken by her to defeat the demon Mahisha, and her hands hold various weapons given to her by all other gods for that purpose. Wonderful bronze with very good casting and detailing, nicely heavy, beautiful patina and devotional wear, crevices with traces of red sandalwood paste used during worship, strong feel of age. Height 3 3/4 inches. 18c Indian bronze 8-armed DURGA as Mahishasuramardini
