19th century kagamibuta (“mirror lid”) netsuke with bronze top depicting a tennin with a closed lotus flower in her hands as she entertains an arhat among swirling clouds. Tennin (apsara in Sanskrit) are female angels who fly through the air clothed in floating garments as they entertain the inhabitants of the Buddhist paradise, and arhats are the original disciples of the historical Buddha. Wonderful quality work with multi-metal inlays, great faces, detailing of their clothes, some wear. Beautiful rosewood bowl with wonderful patina.
